Seasonal Styling from Coast to Coast

We recently spent time with Sustainable Wardrobe Stylist, Jaclyn Patterson, to explore what it looks like to transition from each season while continuing to wear your favourite pieces. Particularly for anyone who is traveling across the continent, Jaclyn provides styling tips to ensure you're prepared for whatever adventure you get up to.

Ecologyst: Although it's the height of the summer, many people are already planning for fall. Do you have any tips for bringing your summer favourites into the cooler weather?

Jaclyn Patterson: The key to extending your summer pieces into fall is strategic layering! Think lightweight cotton shirts under structured blazers or cardigans, dresses under jackets, linen tops and chunky knits, or midi skirts paired with oversized sweaters and boots. I love blending lighter fabrics with more textured, cozy ones to create contrast and warmth. Add in classic fall staples like a tailored wool coat/trench/blazer and boots to give your summer wardrobe a second life. It’s a great way to shop your closet first and build a more intentional, season-less wardrobe!

E: Considering we have very different climates from east to west coast, have you found any items that you stick with when you travel coast to coast, and does your style change at all?

JP: I always travel with versatile, layer-able staples… like a structured blazer or button down, breathable knits, and trousers or denim. Essentially pieces that adapt easily to different climates. Natural fabrics like organic cotton, linen, and merino are key for temperature control. My style stays rooted in elevated minimalism, but I’ll adjust the outfit and accessories based on occasion and activity! For example, we can dress up a tee and trousers with jewellery and a kitten heel, while also wearing the same pieces with sneakers and a cap for weekend adventures. It comes down to flexible pieces that you can style in various ways that still feel like you!

E: The white tee is a staple in any closet - what are the attributes you look for in one that will last?

JP: A slightly thicker, mid-weight fabric offers better coverage and holds its shape longer. Ideally made from 100% organic cotton that’s breathable, durable, and soft on the skin. The weave should feel smooth, not flimsy, and retain its shape when stretched. I also look for clean seams, reinforced stitching, and a well-finished neckline - all signs of thoughtful construction. A great tee is a timeless piece in any wardrobe, and you can select the fit based on your style preference.

E: What's something you're wearing on repeat lately?

JP: I’ve been wearing lightweight cotton or linen button-downs on repeat. They’re breezy enough for hot days and elevate a casual look with shorts and sandals, and can be styled as a layer for more depth within my outfit. I love how effortless they feel while still looking polished. They also layer beautifully into fall with trousers or skirts. Truly a year-round staple!

E: Any tips for increasing emotional durability in items you already own? We often find these stay longer in your closet.

JP: It’s beautifully empowering to embrace a slower, more intentional mindset with your clothing by connecting deeply with the story behind each piece - where it came from, how it makes you feel, and the memories you create in it! Styling your pieces in new ways also helps you rediscover their value and versatility. I encourage all my clients to invest in intentional pieces they truly love, rather than chase micro-trends. When your wardrobe reflects your personal style and values, it naturally becomes something worth caring for and holding onto.
